Safeguarding laws are enacted now which impacts any organisation that works with children and vulnerable adults by creating a legal obligation on its trustees and management. This means that every Gurdwara and Sikh organisation have to appoint a trained Safeguarding Lead or Officer who will be responsible for Safeguarding matters.

Training
1. Training
All Trustees, committee members, employees (Granthis, Kirtania, Langri, administration / Finance and other staff), Volunteers, Sunday school and other teachers should receive Safeguarding training. We also would strongly encourage Gurdwaras to hold regular safeguarding training sessions for sangat as well as Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.

2. Appointing a trained Safeguarding lead
Every Gurdwara should appoint a Designated Safeguarding Lead or Officer (DSL /DSO) responsible for Safeguarding matters and for the Gurdwara Safeguarding program, including training and obtaining DBS checks. For larger Gurdwaras, we encourage a Safeguarding team under the DSL/DSO, with both male and female members. The DSL/DSO should report to the Managing Trustees and local council Safeguarding contacts. In some other faith places of worship, we have seen that this can also be paid full-time or part-time part-time.

The Gurdwara should have comprehensive policies and procedures that cover how Safeguarding will be implemented and run at the Gurdwara. This will deal with the Safeguarding risks at the Gurdwara and include a method for documenting, investigating and actioning safeguarding issues and concerns and maintaining a Safeguarding register.

As part of a Gurdwara Safeguarding program, DBS checks should be carried out by the Gurdwara. In 2020, the Charity Commission worked with SFI, Gurdwara Aid and other faith group organisations to list all positions in all places of worship and what level of DBS checks they expect to see. This was published in June 2020.

Over time, a Gurdwara will see many changes – to committees / Trustees, volunteers, employees, sangat, buildings, activities and events, individuals can get new convictions etc. Any Safeguarding program can quickly become outdated and no longer fit for purpose.
